Art was born on September 8, 1918 at Coulee, ND, to Peter and Johanna (Flolo) Sande. He was raised on the family farmstead in Crowfoot Township of Mountrail County and attended rural schools in the Coulee area prior to graduating from Kenmare High School in 1937. He attended Minot State University for two years. Art entered the US Army in June of 1941. He was stationed in England, and was a part of the D-Day Invasion of the European Theatre in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a sergeant. Art married Laurette Nelson on July 23, 1943 at Stanley, ND. Following his discharge they made their home in Mohall and Westhope where he worked for Midwest Lumber, later known as Great Plains Supply Company for eleven years. Then he was employed by Porter Brothers as manager of the steel warehouse for 44 years and the Aluminum Recycling Center for another twelve years. He retired in 1998. They had resided at Edgewood Vista since August of 2006. Art was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge, VFW Post #753, Minot American Legion Post #26 and Last Man’s Club and was a former member of the Elks Lodge. He especially enjoyed area casinos, working in his yard, spending time with family and friends, playing cards, helping his brother farm and later his son-in-law. His loving family includes: wife of sixty-four years, Laurette; children: Dean (Sandra) Sande, Minot, Jean (Ed) Heit, Glenburn, Jane (Robert) Shea, Minot; Grandchildren: Brent (Jana) Sande and Alesha (Keith) Dockter, Scott (Deanna) Heit, Missi Payne, Mindy Jo (Mike) Halvorson, Brock Bjelland and Whitney Shea; Great-Grandchildren: Sierra and Jaden Payne, Lindsay and Hunter Heit, Makenzie and Mallory Halvorson; Brother: Alfred (Hattie) Sande, Kenmare; Sisters: Martha Musch, Burlington, ND, Carrie Smith, Minot, ND, Jenny Rittenbach, Minot, ND and Viola Gronenthal, Tacoma, WA, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Art was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers: Paul and James Sande and brothers-in-law: Dick Musch, Les Smith and Bill Gronenthal.
