Catherine A. Holmen-Rarey, 96, Minot, formerly of the Parshall area, died Monday, March  24, 2008 in a Minot Hospital.Catherine Holmen-Rarey

Catherine was born March 31, 1911 at Casselton, North Dakota, the daughter of Leon and Molly (Hager) Nafus.   She was raised and educated in the Van Hook and Parshall areas before her family moved to White Earth.   She graduated from White Earth High School in 1929 and was united in marriage to Melvin Holmen in April of 1930.

They made their home at Parshall, where she and Melvin were involved in several businesses in that area.     Catherine and Melvin moved to California in 1954.  Melvin died in April of 1960.    She returned to Minot in October of 2007, to be nearer her family.      Catherine was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.     She enjoyed baking, dancing, and maintained a large clown collection.  She was an avid NBA Basketball fan, and especially enjoyed watching the Los Angeles Lakers.   

Catherine’s loving family includes:  Daughter: Janice Birkholz, Minot; Son-in-Law: Galen Kaeding, California; Grandchildren: Maureen (Richard) Dimont, Beverly (Jim) Hawkinson, Kristi (Steven) Lausch, Christopher (Shannon) Kaeding; Six Great-Grandchildren;  Nieces: Deanie (Jim) Iverson of Newtown, Valerie McGuire of Maui, HI, Nephews: Reuben (Gloria) Ulrich of Sun City West, AZ and Patrick (Nancy) Murphy of Placentia, California.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Melvin, daughter: Sandra Kaeding, five sisters, one brother and son-in-law: Maurice Birkholz.

Memorial service: Monday, March 31, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.  in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
Visitation: At the request of the family, there will be no reviewal, however friends may sign a memorial register book on Sunday from noon-5pm in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot
