Maxine was born February 24, 1929 at Beulah, North Dakota, the daughter of Emanuel and Martha (Kerner) Schumaier. She was raised and educated at Beulah and united in marriage to Walter L. Hummel on June 20, 1948 at Beulah. They made their home in Garrison with their four children: Michael, Donavan, Valarie, and Laurie. The family moved to Minot in 1962. Maxine was an active homemaker and mother. She loved sewing and was an avid quilter along with her many friends in the Prairie Quilters Guild. She was also devoted to her church, Bethany Lutheran, where she spent many hours serving her fellow members in a number of ways including chair of the Bethany Sewing Group. Maxine enjoyed playing cards, camping, traveling, exercise class, gardening, and cooking German dishes, but sewing was her passion. She sewed everything from matching dresses to leisure suits to lingerie, and her alteration and mending abilities were outstanding. She made a quilt to celebrate her family’s events including: weddings, births, and graduations. Her family was her greatest love as was her love for her husband: Walter, with whom she lovingly celebrated almost 60 years of marriage. She will be greatly missed by her loving friends and family.
