Virgil MillerVirgil Lawrence Miller, 73, Minot, died Friday September 8, 2006, in a Minot hospital after a three year battle with cancer.

Virgil was born September 4, 1933, in Minot to Virgil and Lilly (Hansen) Miller.  He was raised in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1951 and Minot State University in 1955.

Virgil married Dorothy Meyer on July 21, 1956, in Rugby.  They made their home in Rolette and Parshall where Virgil was a teacher and coach.  The family then resided in Grand Forks, Montana, Minot and Texas while Virgil was employed with Boeing.  The family returned to Minot where Virgil was employed by the City of Minot.  He owned and operated Miller's Sprinkling for a number of years prior to retiring.


Virgil was a member of First Lutheran Church.  His hobbies and special interests included hunting, fishing, and spending time at Lake Metigoshe.

Virgil participated in high school and college athletics, and continued his love for athletics through coaching and refereeing.  He especially loved watching his grandsons perform in all of their athletic endeavors, and regularly volunteered his expertise to coaches and game officials from the sidelines.  

Virgil's family includes his wife of 50 years, Dorothy; daughters: Jo (Neil) Scharpe, Minot, Kristy (Terry) Fleck, Bismarck, and Penny Miller (Doug Mattson), Bismarck and Minot; grandsons: Jason (Collette), Blake, Paul and David Scharpe and Leif Mattson all of Minot; great grandson: Connor Scharpe (born September 7, 2006); mother: Lily Bakken, Minot; sisters: Bonnie Lyon and Gloria (Jim) West,  Minot; sisters in law:  Delores Vangsnes, Fargo, and Joyce Scott, Rugby; brothers in law:  Will (Jan) Meyer, Fargo, and Jerry (Mavis) Meyer, Kenmare, and numerous nieces and nephews.  

Memorial Service:  Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church – Minot.
Visitation:  There will be no reviewal but friends may sign a memorial register on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot
In lieu of flowers, memorials to MSU Beaver Boosters, Minot Public School Foundation, Magic City Youth Baseball or First Lutheran Church are preferred.
